What is Homeopathy?

Nowadays, homeopathy is a common form of medical treatment. As you may have seen, they are sold in health food stores and at high-end groceries. Although you may have seen them while shopping for your groceries, you may not know exactly what they are. So, What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is an alternative medical system that was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago. It is a complete system of medicine which assists the natural tendency of the human body to heal itself. It is a treatment based on the idea that “ ‘like cure like’ – the notion that a disease can be cured by a substances that produce similar symptoms in health people” and use highly diluted substances.

What Is Homeopathy

The homeopathy remedies are made from substances that come from plants, minerals or animals. They include arnica, red onion, crushed whole bees among many others. They are normally formulated as sugar pellets to be placed under the tongue, thus they can also be in other forms like drops, tablets, ointments, gels, cream, etc.

Homeopathy health practitioners usually believe that the more a substance is diluted, the greater its power to treat symptoms. And although homeopathy is commonly used to treat a vast range of condition, which include physical conditions like asthma and psychological conditions like depression, there still doubt about its effectiveness.

The most common conditions treated with homeopathic treatments are:

  • asthma
  • ear infections
  • hay fever
  • depression, stress and anxiety
  • allergies
  • dermatitis
  • arthritis
  • high blood pressure

When first time visiting a homeopathy, he/she will usually ask you if you know what is homeopathy and will explain how it works. Moreover he/she will ask you about any specific health conditions including your general well-being, emotional state, lifestyle and diet. Based on that information he/she will decide on the course of treatment most suitable for you and may recommend that you attend one or more follow-up appointment to check closely the progress of the treatment.

Homeopathy remedies are generally safe and risk-free. However, some homeopathic remedies may contain substances that are not safe or can interfere with the action of other traditional medicines.
